Design & Animation for Documentary Web Series
in collaboration with
David Zamorano

By creating graphic motion compositions, the proposal aimed to complement the narrative and content presented in the documentary series Fotógrafxs del Sur, which recovers the stories and analogue photographic archives of Chilean photographers.

Art Direction & Design

The graphic space functions as a structural element, using resources such as collage, textures, duotone imagery, and handwritten script.

Considering the project's objectives and scope, the Art & Design proposal sought to complement the photographic language of the series through graphic constructions: compositions of analogue and editorial graphic elements, typographic compositions, duotone imagery, archival material, notes, handwritten text, analogue print textures, and visual resources commonly found in experimental publications or artists'vbooks.

Motion Design

The motion design sought to translate the project's graphic language into motion using analogue-inspired techniques, including moving textures, image offsets, cut-outs, voice-over-driven kinetic typography, and handcrafted details that reinforced a fluid, handmade aesthetic.

We proposed a visual language consistent with the established art direction, translating it into motion through animation techniques inspired by analogue processes and collage aesthetics. This included the deliberate use of lower frame rates, subtle image misalignment, moving textures, and techniques such as cut-outs, torn-paper effects, handwritten details and pencil marks—all animated with a fluid, analogue, handcrafted approach.

Once the overall visual language for the animations was approved, we moved directly into the Design and Animation phases for Episode 1: Rodrigo Gómez Rovira.

We developed a flexible design and production system that enabled the creation of customised animated content across all seven episodes whilst keeping a cohesive visual language throughout the whole series. For each episode, we reviewed the storyboards and visual narrative together with the client before incorporating their feedback into the final designs.
